ADD
Jeremy, 11 - Before
Jeremy went for integration he was having memory problems, difficulty
with reading as well as spelling. After being integrated Jeremy started
reading books for pleasure. He had never done this in his life. He said,
"School is more fun." The teachers said that he can focus now in class
so he is in a higher reading group and the highest math class. On the
the state tests his reading fluency and math scores went
up. Also he is more coordinated in ball sports.
Tom, 46 - Before
BIT I had to read material over and over and even then I would usually
forget what I learned seconds later. Now, (after BIT) I can focus and
concentrate on what I am reading and remember whatever I need to remember
and it is so easy.
Also, before BIT I would get angry often and stay that way for a week.
Now when feelings come up I can let go and shift quickly away from the
anger.
Alyssa, 8 - Before
BIT Alyssa had difficulty concentrating budgeting time, following directions,
and remembering what she read. Her attention span was very short.
Soon after being integrated her school took her out of the Special Ed
program and put her in the regular classroom. This was because she was
able to sit for longer periods, pay attention, focus and concentrate.
Laurel, 14 - Laurel
is an artist; it is how she defines herself. Teachers, family, and friends
would tell you that she drew all the time. It was constantly distracting
her in school and at family occasions. After the first session of BIT
(3 hours) Laurel got into the car and did not reach for her drawing
pad. She continued not to draw for several days. This was unheard of!
After about five days we became concerned that she would no longer be
able to draw. At her first art class, she did not draw as well as she
was used to. After about ten days Laurel returned to drawing well.
She now draws when it is appropriate. Her teachers report she draws
less and is more attentive in school. Recently Laurel took standardized
tests in school. Her scores had been level for the last two years. Laurel
tests very high as she is very intelligent. Her Math score went up 15
points and her Language and Reading scores 5 points! Her math teacher
stopped me in school to report awesome progress. (Math was one of her
most difficult subjects.) Her dad and I find her more conversational
with us at home and more open to spending more time with us.
Jane, 16 - I have
always had difficulty concentrating and following directions at school.
I've also been very impulsive and poor at organization. I love art and
have a great talent in this area. Most of my school time has been spent
doing my art work even when I was supposed to be doing school work.
As soon as I was integrated I was able to make A DECISION TO DO
WHAT I NEEDED TO DO FOR SCHOOL rather than do whatever I wanted to do.
(My art work.) I had so many opportunities to do what I enjoy but it
was easier to make the decision to study for my tests instead. Also,
when I did sit down to study I was calmer, could sit more easily and
for longer periods and I could focus on what I was reading.
Dan, 21 - Before
I was integrated I had a very hard time concentrating. I loved school
but did not have the patience to sit down and study for more than half
an hour. I daydreamed excessively, had a short attention span, was impatient
and restless, and was very slow in completing my work. Many times I
did not complete my work and did not get good grades.
After being integrated (BIT) I feel smarter, thoughts come together
in my mind more easily and make more sense. I am thinking more clearly.
In the three to four weeks after BIT I have read 2 and a half books
and have read many times for 2-3 hours at a time. I would never have
had the patience to get through so much material. It is just easier
to sit still and I am more motivated to read and learn. I am now retaining
so much from my reading. Whereas before BIT I thought I was strictly
an auditory learner.
I have a strong desire to write now, to publish a book. I would never
have thought of this before. Since I love school, I can now consider
going for a PhD. Before BIT this would have been way out of my grasp.
